Aftercare Advice

Everyone reacts differently to getting pierced and some heal better than others. The important thing is to listen to your body. Your body is usually very good at telling you when something is wrong. Piercings can become problematic due to several factors. These can include but are not limited to: aggravation of the piercing (clothing, catching on things, movement, impact etc.) using aftercare products that are too harsh and/or are not recommended, and contact from unwashed hands and bodily fluids.

Below is a general guide for how long each piercing can take to heal. Please don’t be alarmed if your piercing heals at a different pace to this, as every body is different!

Lobe - 6 weeks

Cartilage - 3-6 months+

Industrial - 6-9 months+ (can be much longer)

Nose - 3-6 months+

Septum - 4-6 weeks

Nipple - 6 months

Navel - 6 months

Eyebrow - 2-3 months

Lip - 6 weeks

Smiley - 2-4 weeks

FEEL FREE TO COME TO SEE US IF YOU HAVE ANY PROBLEMS WITH YOUR PIERCING

Follow the next steps to help with a healthy recovery:
- Clean your piercing twice a day using the recommended mild saltwater solution
- Do not use harsh chemicals to clean your piercing
- After bathing ensure that all shampoo, conditioner, body wash etc. is thoroughly washed away
- Do not play with your new piercing or let others touch it
- Your jewellery will move slightly whilst cleaning - other than this it does not need to be moved
- Do not wear tight clothing that could rub or constrict your piercing (waistbands, hats, scarves etc.)

- Avoid swimming pools and otherwise submerging your piercing for the first few weeks of healing
- Do not pick at your piercing - there may be some crust around your piercing during healing, this is totally normal as long as it is clear/white/pale yellow - green, foul smelling liquid indicates infection

- Often, what is thought to be an infection is actually a build up of perfectly healthy lymph or fluid and is to be expected following a piercing. If you think that your piercing is infected, please pop into the studio or give us a call and we will do our best to advise you on what’s best to do.
- Cartilage piercings are particularly sensitive to impact, so avoid it as much as possible during the healing period. Especially try not to sleep on your piercing: the healing can take much longer and it can cause the piercing to migrate, meaning it can heal wonky. If you are advised to come back to downsize your jewellery, please try to do this as it can have a big impact on how well your piercing heals. It may also be useful to use a travel pillow whilst you sleep to keep pressure on your piercing to a minimum

*SALTWATER SOLUTION*
Mix 1/4 tsp of rock or sea salt (NOT table salt) to one cup of warm water (236ml) in a clean glass and stir until the salt is completely dissolved. Clean your piercing twice a day using this solution and either a clean cotton bud or gauze. Dry completely after cleaning using the other side of the cotton bud. for oral piercing, this solution can be used in place of a non-alcoholic mouthwash.

FOR ORAL PIERCING SPECIFICALLY:
- Avoid kissing or performing oral sex for the first few days
- If you smoke, try to cut down during the healing period and rinse your mouth with saltwater after smoking, if possible
- Avoid alcohol and spicy food for the first 2 weeks
- Ice and slush puppies are great for reducing swelling
- Rinse your mouth out with saltwater solution after meals

FOR LUMPS AND BUMPS: Most bumps that appear on piercings (and most often on cartilage piercings) are NOT keloids or hypertrophic scarring, they are fluid-filled bumps. If knocked they can secrete a fluid that looks like pus, but this does not mean they are infected. They can go up and down as the piercing heals and will sometimes go away on their own, but if you’d like to speed up the process you can use a chamomile compress;

Get some pure chamomile tea bags (make sure there is no real tea or caffeine in the teabags), steep the teabag in boiling water for a few minutes then fish it out and let it cool ever so slightly just to a point where you do not burn yourself, but you still want it to be as hot as you can stand. Wrap it around the piercing under gentle compress until the teabag has gone stone cold. Repeat. Do this instead of both of your daily cleans and within a few weeks the fluid build-up should have gone. There's a chance it'll look look worse before it looks better, so it's just a case of carrying on. Keep the area nice and clean - don't apply lotions, makeup or any other products close to the piercing area, don't pick at the piercing and other than when you're doing your compresses, try not to touch it.
